Benjamin Russell serves as Student Rabbi and Spiritual Leader of Beth Israel Congregation in Jackson, Mississippi. A lifelong Mississippian, Ben has been part of the Beth Israel community since 2010 and has served in synagogue leadership for over a decade, including as Cantorial Soloist since 2012.

Drawing on backgrounds in both music and psychology, Ben brings a relational, pastoral, and deeply spiritual approach to Jewish life, weaving together tradition, learning, music, and community-building both on and beyond the bimah.

Ben is currently pursuing rabbinic ordination through ALEPH: Alliance for Jewish Renewal, where his studies focus on Jewish theology, text, spirituality, and contemporary Jewish leadership.

Following the January 2026 fire that displaced Beth Israel Congregation from its historic building, Ben has helped lead the congregation through a period of transition, resilience, and renewed community partnership within the wider Jackson community.

Outside synagogue life and study, Ben enjoys reading, spending time outdoors, and sharing life with his spouse, Joey, their dog, Bob, and cat, Squeaker.
